Whose Culture? The Promise of Museums and the Debate Over Antiquities

Whose Culture?, edited by James Cuno, contains an introduction and 9 essays on the role of major museums in the preservation of world culture. Far from being an esoteric, jargon-filled look at a debate between archaeologists and collectors of antiquities, these essays, some from conference presentations, some philosophical, and some impassioned, show that the whose-cultural-property debate runs parallel to and intersects other problem areas in the modern world. Aside from an occasional, defined term, like partage, there is limited use of jargon and most mentions of art are either illustrated or of well-known pieces.

Introduction to Whose Culture? by James Cuno

If the debate is new to you, save this intro until you've read a few chapters. It is an overview that also explains why the book is biased in favor of encyclopedic museums. Underlying the discussion is the idea that archaeologists believe looting, which causes loss or destruction of the archaeological information, would be less of a problem if museums didn't buy from private collectors. Although museums value the archaeological context, they want to preserve the artifacts, as well. In addition, they seek to present the artifacts to the largest possible audience. Examples, like the Rosetta Stone, which was excavated before there was a field of archaeology, show the intrinsic value of antiquities.

Part One - The Value of Museums

Encyclopedic Museums, like the British Museum, are Enlightenment products designed to make visitors more familiar with and sympathetic to others' cultures. From the founding of the UN (1947), and especially since 1970, there has been a proliferation of retentionist cultural property laws and hoarding. Partage, allowing host nations and archaeologists to share finds, has stopped. These two trends have hampered encyclopedic museums. This comes at a time when the world is increasingly divided along ideological, political, and cultural lines... so the loss to museums is especially to be regretted.

MacGregor and Montebello originally delivered their contributions to this book at a 2006 Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) conference.

To Shape the Citizens of 'That Great City, the World', by Neil MacGregor

MacGregor begins with the story of why the British Museum collection is located in London. The donor, Sir Hans Sloane, citizen of the world, wanted the collection to be kept together and viewed by as many people as possible, so the largest international center of its time was his first pick for the universal museum. The collection was to show visitors, both natives of the UK and the world, the current world as much as world history. The enlightenment encyclopedic museum was supposed to show viewers truths that are only apparent in the context of other items.

The British Museum sends out objects to other museums and schools and takes in objects from other cultures as part of its mission to be a universal museum.

And What Do You Propose Should Be Done With Those Objects? by P. de Montebello

Philippe de Montebello says the job of encyclopedic museums is to acquire, conserve, display, and publish with a goal of presenting the collection to the largest possible audience. Studying objects in museums has great benefits denied objects within an archaeological context or local museum because there is much more for comparison and contrast. He gives reasons with historic examples of why objects shouldn't be kept at archaeological sites, including broad access and protection in times of crisis. Although trade Rosetta Stone Chinese (Mandarin) in illegal loot is reprehensible, unprovenanced artifacts have value and don't lead to a multi-billion dollar illegal industry. By public display, improperly acquired objects can be claimed.

Whose Culture Is It? by Kwame Anthony Appiah of Princeton University

Pillaging of cultural patrimony is one of the ambiguities and paradoxes Appiah, a native of Ghana, describes. Culture means both artifacts and the group that creates the artifacts. Cultural patrimony can be pillaged, but the country that claims it may have acquired it at an earlier period by pillaging someone else. Patrimony can mean imperialism plus time. Some countries are too poor to care for their artifacts. Allowing their export ensures preservation where hoarding would probably lead to oblivion. Most great art isn't bound to a single culture. A move to remove objects offensive to hard-line Taliban was thwarted by UNESCO. Appiah says we need to think beyond borders to human art.

Part Two - The Value of Antiquities

Antiquities have aesthetic, technological, iconographics, and epigraphic value in addition to archaeological, and the objective value of an excavated artifact. James C.Y. Wyatt, who presented at the same conference as MacGregor and de Montebello, looks at what can be learned Rosetta Stone Arabic about Chinese artifacts from their archaeological context. Sir John Boardman takes fellow archaeologist Colin Renfrew to task, and David I. Owen looks at the benefits conferred by unprovenanced antiquities.

Antiquities and the Importance -- and Limitations -- of Archaeological Contexts

James C. Y. Wyatt starts off making the claim that professional archaeologists who make archaeological context paramount are like early Church fathers denying redemption to the unbaptized. He then says that in prehistoric archaeology, context is paramount, but it reduces in importance with literacy. Archaeology can't tell why people created puzzling artifacts. Even if we can't understand what it's for, we can appreciate its aesthetics., and that has value, denied by the mentioned archaeologists. Certain traits have staying power -- for the Chinese, a passion for jade; for mankind, collecting. There are times when the geographic location of a find is significant, but only sometimes.

Archaeologists, Collectors, and Museums, by Sir John Boardman

Boardman responds to Colin Renfrew and other outspoken, but atypical archaeologists. Looting is criminal and endemic in human history, like genocide. Religiously motivated actions of the Taliban in destroying the Bamiyan Buddhas didn't kill people. It was just as right an action for a religious individual as Moses' destruction of Aaron's Golden Calf. What would be worse for human knowledge is the destruction of an unpublished site. Few excavations are published despite the fact that the excavations are publicly funded. Museums do more for mankind's understanding than excavations, except in the area of prehistory. Legislation makes it preferable for someone coming upon a hoard of coins to melt it Rosetta Stone English down than to bring it to a collector.

Censoring Knowlege, by David I. Owen

In Censoring Knowlege: The Case for the Publication of Unprovenanced Cuneiform Tablets, David I. Owens argues that the bans of archaeological societies on the publication of or even reference to unprovenanced cuneiform tablets are unforgiveable errors. Motivation for the censorship is the appearance of looted documents on eBay etc. Lack of provenance does not negate the historical value of the artifacts for the history of Mesopotamia, although an archaeologist equated those who publish them with supporters of terrorists. Owens agrees with Lawrence Stager's assessment of such archaeologists who refuse to work with unprovenanced finds as jihadists.

Part Three - Museums, Antiquities, and Cultural Property

The final section looks at the political pressures restricting international access to products of culture. Michael F. Brown looks at the problems of cultural property. Derek looks three major artifacts to see what if anything can be learned about nationalist culturalist claims. The final essay, by John Henry Merryman, proposes judging artifacts using a hierarchy of competing claims: Rosetta Stone preservation, truth, and access.

10 common car-buying mistakes

With interest rates near record lows, it might seem like now is a great time to buy a new car. But don't speed down to the dealership just yet. Take the time to do a little homework first. Many car-buying mistakes are quite common, say auto industry watchers. To identify those errors, we asked for advice from experts at Edmunds, AutoPacific, J.D. Power and Associates and AAA. They gave us their best advice for navigating what can be a confusing path to buying a car. They also told us that most dealers are honest, reliable and hardworking local businessmen and women, but that there are some simple precautions every consumer should take before purchasing a car.How much car can you afford?1. Talking too much. Three things to never say on the lot:"I need this car now." Desperation breeds price inflation."I love this car". Emotions make you vulnerable."This is how much I can afford to pay per month." Once dealers know how much you want to pay per month, they'll find other ways -- through fees, warranties and financing -- to make up the difference between that payment ceiling and how much they must make on a sale. Talk about the absolute price of a car, not the monthly payment.2. Not doing your research. Walking into a dealership open to any ideas the salesperson has is a bad idea -- it makes you vulnerable to impulsively buying something you don't need, can't afford or ultimately won't want. Determining the market value of your car will help you know where to begin negotiations on the starting price of the vehicle. Use Kelley Blue Book (you can check Kelley values on MSN Autos here), the NADA Guides research center, Cars, AutoTrader and Edmunds to find the true market value and the expected residual value of the car you want.3. Not being realistic about what you need. Before you hit the showroom floor, take a hard look at the kind of driving you do. Don't assume you need a brand-new car, and consider keeping a driving journal for a week, or even a month, to chart exactly when, where and how far you drive Rosetta Stone Language each day. Then buy a vehicle according to those needs -- not aspirations, like thinking "maybe someday we'll need to tow a boat, so I need a truck with three-ton towing capacity."4. Leasing a car because you can't afford the down payment. Lease payments, especially for luxury cars, don't require a down payment and are often cheaper per month than what it costs to buy the car outright. But they don't always pay off. You have to determine if having a new car every two or three years and with no down payment -- but no ownership and no stake in the residual value -- is more important than long-term cost savings and ownership of a vehicle you will eventually pay off.5. Assuming you'll use the dealer's financing. Instead of going through the dealership, arrange for financing at your bank or credit union. And choose the shortest-term car loan you can; long-term loans coax people into buying cars they can't really afford by stretching out the payments over such a long period that the car is almost fully depreciated by the time it's paid off.Find the best car loan6. Buying at the beginning of the month. Dealers don't offer their best deals or incentives until the end of the month, when they realize how close they are to (or how far they are far from) hitting monthly sales goals. So if you can, wait it out.7. Buying at the beginning of the year. Dealers have less incentive to give you a great deal at the start of the year, when their inventory is brand-new and they have 12 months to hit annual sales targets. But in December, they'll have to clear out old stock in time for the new model-year cars to hit the showroom. That's when you should buy.8. Discussing the trade-in deal during the new-car negotiation. Be honest at the beginning that you may want to trade in your old vehicle -- but keep the new-car purchase discussion and the trade-in value discussion separate.

Animal bone markings show evidence that Lucy species used stone tools, ate meat

in Paleontology ArchaeologyTwo Arizona State University researchers conducting zooarchaeological and archaeometric analyses of four fossilized animal bone fragments found by the Dikika Research Project in northeastern Ethiopia – within walking distance of the discovery of the hominin skeleton "Lucy" (Australopithecus afarensis) – confirm that unusual marks on the bones were inflicted by stone tools. Their conclusion weighs in on findings reported in the Aug. 12 journal Nature, that A. afarensis used sharp-edged stones and a strong striking force to cleave flesh and marrow from large-sized animal carcasses some 3.4 million years ago. That evidence pushes back the origins of technology – the use of stone tools – and carnivory by some 800,000 years, from 2.6 Myr to 3.4, explained Curtis Marean, a paleoanthropologist at ASU's Institute of Human Origins and one of the world's leading experts in the study of animal bones from archaeological sites.Marean, a professor in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change in ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, is a member of the international team made up of experts in paleoanthropology, archeology, geology, paleontology and materials science who reported the findings in the Nature article "Evidence for stone-tool-assisted consumption of animal tissues before 3.39 million years ago at Dikika, Ethiopia."The zooarchaeological analysis of the bone fragments, which included a femur shaft from an animal the size of a goat and a rib fragment from a much larger animal the size of a cow, was conducted at Arizona State University. Using a standard binocular microscope in ASU's zooarchaeology laboratory, Marean was able to provide evidence that sharp-edged stones and a strong striking force were used to remove flesh and marrow from the bones Rosetta Stone of large-sized animal carcasses. To further determine that the markings were not modern, he turned to Hamdallah Béarat, a senior research scientist at ASU's School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy."To confirm that the cutmarks on the bones are 'old' and verify that they were induced by stone tools, I used the Environmental Cell Scanning Electron Microscope (E-SEM) and the attached Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDX) in ASU's LeRoy Eyring Center for Solid State Science," said Béarat, who has degrees in chemistry, archaeometry, material science and engineering. The E-SEM was used because it has a chamber and stage that can accommodate large bone fragments, Béarat explained."And, since the bone material is an insulator and these precious bone samples cannot be coated with a conducting film, such as gold or carbon, this E-SEM allows us to run the analysis in the H2O-vapor mode and thus avoid charging effects, while still using a high accelerating voltage (15-25kV)," Béarat said."Hamdallah is an expert in materials research and keenly interested in archaeology," noted Marean. "He had the great idea to do X-ray mapping of the surfaces of the bone to see whether minerals that passed from the marks to the surface of the bone were fossilized."The geologist on the team, Jonathan Wynn, from the University of South Florida, relied on documented dated volcanic deposits in the Dikika area to estimate the date of the marked bones to 3.4 million years ago."This discovery dramatically shifts the known timeframe of a game-changing behavior for our ancestors," said paleoanthropologist Zeresenay "Zeray" Alemseged, director of the Dikika project and director of anthropology at the California Academy of Sciences. No hominin remains were found with the animal bone fragments that were uncovered 200 meters away from the site where Alemseged and a team discovered "Selam" (Lucy's baby) in 2000. Lucy was discovered in 1974 a few miles north, near Hadar, by Donald Johanson, the world renowned ASU paleoanthropologist."There is no question that the announcement of stone tool use at 3.4 million years ago will unleash a flurry of controversy and genuine disbelief among some scholars," said Johanson.

Don't get me wrong - teacher should be paid more, in fact, I think that as long as pay in our society is unequal, teachers deserve more of it than anyone else, except maybe fire fighters. But that's not an education reform, that's just a matter of valuing teachers. Some of these reforms require adopting a new ideology, some mean relinquishing a bit of control, and at least one costs money. It's difficult for adults to change their ways of being, and people, especially those without children in public school, don't seem willing to invest more of their own money.?It's always easier to find someone or some group of people to blame for a problem, but the truth is that the problems of education in the United States are structural, and we won't solve them by focusing on the players instead of how the game is played.

A fox with a bit of hedgehog

THE LAST MAN WHO KNEW EVERYTHING by Andrew Robinson Oneworld, Replace the commas in the subtitle of this book, 'Thomas Young, the Anonymous Polymath who Proved Newton Wrong, Explained How We See, and Deciphered theAmong Other Feats of Genius', with exclamation marks, and it reads like the title of a Gillray cartoon or the patter of a circus huckster. The problem we have with polymaths, as Andrew Robinson points out in his introduction, is that they do seem too good to be true. When it comes to Isaiah Berlin's famous distinction between thinkers -- hedgehogs, who know one big thing, and foxes, who know many things -- we are generally more comfortable with the hedgehogs. Or rather, preferring to pin thinkers down into easily memorable categories, we will foxes into hedgehogs. The foxes, with their wide-ranging intellectual curiosity and manifold talents excite our suspicion. Perhaps they are plausible quacks; perhaps they force us to acknowledge our own blinkered specialisms. Thomas Young, with his achievements in optics, physics, medicine, philology, life insurance and mechanics (among other things), was a remarkable figure in the early 19th century; he now has the biography he deserves. He was elected to the Royal Society at the tender age of 21. In his late twenties his theory of optics in the eye led to researches which demonstrated that light acted as waves, not, as Newton had said, a stream of corpuscles. In his forties he contributed 63 articles to the supplement of the Encyclopaedia Britannica on subjects as diverse and complicated as bridges, ancient Egypt and tides; at the same time he was making the first moves in the unlocking of the riddle of the . And these are just a few of the things that Young managed to cram into his life. He died in 1827, aged just 56. The list of his achievements Rosetta Stone Software is enough to make the reader feel dizzy and at least a little inadequate; it is a problem for the biographer as well.It would be too easy to eulogise such a character. In another author's hands, Young might have been treated with reverential awe. But Robinson is an experienced enough writer to give the case against his subject as well as attempting to justify the big claims of the title. In his own time and ever since Young has been accused of spreading himself too widely to make a real mark in any of his fields. As one friend complained to Young, it was a matter of regret that his versatility was such that he was forever being pulled 'from mathematics to Greek philosophy and from that to medicine' so that he was unable to bring his discoveries to a 'pitch of perfection'. But, as this book shows, Young is a key figure in the history of science. It was just that he did not boast about his discoveries, or indeed explain them with the precision required of a rigorous discipline; it was left to later generations to elucidate Young's insights. There would be no research grant for Young today. As he said, he preferred 'general investigations to particular applications', but doubted whether the world would have benefited had he confined himself to a narrower sphere. He would have found it impossible to do so. Fortunately, he had the rare luxury to go where his mind led him. I take the sobriquet 'The Last Man Who Knew Everything' to apply to his methodology rather than to a miraculous feat of memory and reading. For in every aspect of his researches Young returned to first principles. He had a prodigious memory and the ability to hold a multitude of competing theories in his mind at once. He cleared his mind of the cant and received opinions and sacred tenets of science and medicine that imprisoned the thinking of many of his contemporaries.

Oral language and beginning to read

Introduction Oral language has long been regarded as the foundation for beginning reading as children draw on the meaning, syntax and the phonology of spoken language as a bridge to emergent literacy (Saracho & Spodek, 2007; NICHD, 2005; Poe, Burchinal & Roberts, 2004; Menyuk & Chesnick, 1997). Oral language and print knowledge are viewed as the two pillars of learning to read (Mol, Bus & De Jong, 2009). As oral language is related to learning to read many teachers are concerned about the vast diversity in the oral language capabilities of children starting school. In this small study of children in a metropolitan school in Adelaide the teachers commented that some children were beginning school with relatively small vocabularies and some used forms of nonstandard oral language. The teachers thought that children with nonstandard forms of English syntax may have difficulty accessing the syntax of books or book language to aid their beginning reading. Also the school had increasing numbers of children with English as an additional language as well as children who speak languages which have not been recorded in written form. The concern of these teachers led to questions about oral language and reading which are explored further through a review of literature, several case studies of groups of young children who are beginning to read emergent texts and an analysis of oral and written language.Oral language as a predictor of early reading The importance of oral language as a predictor of future literacy achievement is supported by research across a number of oral language domains. Young children need to have control over several aspects of oral language prior to starting the beginning to read process--phonology, vocabulary, syntax, discourse and pragmatics (Snow, Burns & Griffin, 1998). The National Early Literacy Panel (2008) in the United States in a review of research concluded that some aspects of oral language had substantial correlations with decoding and reading comprehension. There are several characteristics of Rosetta Stone English oral language: word meanings (semantics), sentence structure (syntax), the architecture of words and word parts (morphology) and sounds (phonology) (Richgels, 2004). In this paper the particular characteristics of oral language phonology, syntax and vocabulary will be explored and compared to written language. There has been a wealth of research evidence over the past 20 years demonstrating a strong link between phonological awareness and the ability to learn to read and spell. Measures of preschoolers' level of phonemic awareness strongly predicts their future success in learning to read and 'maybe the most important core and casual factor separating normal and disabled readers' (Adams 1990, pp. 304-305). Children's awareness of phonology, particularly rhyme and alliteration, was found to have a powerful effect in their eventual success in learning to read (Bradley & Bryant, 1983). Phonological skills, particularly rhyming, enable children to make analogies when learning to read and this is important in alphabetic literacy where there is a grapheme-to-phoneme relationship (Goswami & Bryant, 1990; Byrne, 1998). In learning to read, phoneme segmentation was also found important for the reading of sight words and the matching of sounds to words. Dixon, Stuart and Masterson (2002) found that children's phoneme segmentation ability was related to not only learning new words quickly but also for building up a detailed representation of words useful for reading, proof reading and eventually spelling. The use of syntax or grammar in oral language has been identified as important for beginning reading comprehension and vocabulary development (Bowyer-Crane et al., 2008).

Learning Management Systems and Online Home Schooling

The Grace Academy is an online homeschool program that utilizes a Learning Management System (LMS). This system is a package of software allowing students to access online courses from anywhere at any time of the day. By using a Learning Management System, students are free to learn at their own pace.Learning Management Systems typically include a vast database of information. However, this database is not just a source of information; it's a dynamic network of interlinking courses, assignments, readings, offsite materials, and more. Our Learning Management System, for example, offers students the opportunity to keep track of a student's progress throughout the year. Our gradebook and testing structure are Rosetta Stone Latin Spanish fully integrated.A Learning Management System usually has a heavier back-end management system that organizes the roles, users, course structures, report-generation, and teacher access. There are many different roles that a Learning Management System must play. Many different parties must be able to use it. Teachers and homeschool administrators should be allowed to send mass communications to the base of students and a variety of other functions.A primary advantage of a homeschool Learning Management System is its ability to be updated on the fly. Instead of waiting for years before new editions of homeschooling textbooks can be published, teachers are able to update the courses as soon as changes take place. For instance, we were able to demote Pluto from its former planetary status within a day of the decision by scientists to do so. It took will take years for other curricula to catch up. This is especially valuable in the social sciences as breakthroughs are common.

Counting the Home Schooling Costs For Yourself

There are a lot of different things that need to be taken into consideration whenever you're homeschooling a child. Watching your child develop into a healthy adult is certainly one of the greatest benefits of teaching your child at home but there are a few other things that warrant some attention. For example, keeping home schooling costs in mind is important if you are going to be successful for the long-term.The fact of the matter is, there are a lot of things to take into consideration whenever you are trying to determine the home schooling costs. Things such as purchasing books, taking your child on field trips, paying for the curriculum as well as numerous other things are all going to end up very quickly. Although the average is about $3000 per year in order to teach your child at home, that number can vary by quite a bit depending on what you put into it.There are also some other home schooling costs that you need to take into consideration. For example, will one of the parents have to forgo working as a result of teaching the children at home? This can take you from a two income family down to a one income family and can seriously impact your budget. It is important Rosetta Stone Chinese for you to consider what is coming into the house as well as what is going out of the house whenever you are trying to determine home schooling costs. Only after you have done this, will you be able to make a good decision as far as whether this will work for your family or not. GCSE reform next month would also mean more varied questions. New Conservative plans for A-levels and GCSEs emerged last night. Some of the proposals being considered include giving more points in school league tables for A-levels achieved in "hard" subjects, such as maths and physics, and fewer points for so-called "soft" subjects such as media studies; and removing vocational qualifications, including the government's flagship new diploma, from league table rankings because they are "nowhere near as academically demanding". Michael Gove, the shadow children's secretary, told the?Sunday Telegraph?that Labour's "meddling and micromanaging of exams" had "dumbed down" the system. Homeschooling vs public school you decide?

The Benefits of Home Schooling

A child's education is one of the most important things they will ever accomplish. It can be hard to watch them throw an education away. It can be even tougher to watch others fail to educate your child properly. If you have considered home schooling your child, there are a number of benefits you have to offer them. A family member's contribution to a child's education is often just as important, and sometimes more important, than the contribution of a stranger. One of the best benefits of home schooling is that you get to choose the curriculum. Unlike most public or private school teachers, you can design your child's learning experience around the things they enjoy. You can help to promote lifelong learning skills by simply showing them how the various subjects relate to their levels of interests. You decide what to teach and when to teach it because you know your child better than anyone else ever could. Another great benefit of home schooling is that the Rosetta Stone English learning experience will never stop for your children. You don't just have to be your child's teacher. You can continue to work through a concept throughout the day, month, or year. You have the power to guide your child's knowledge, to help them question and learn the things they need to know. They no longer just have to apply the concepts to a classroom environment, you can take those concepts outside the classroom and apply them to the world they will eventually live in. One final benefit of homeschooling your children is that you get the opportunity to consistently model the behavior you want them to apply to their lives. They no longer have to see the behavior of others and try to decide which way you might want them to go. They can see how you live your life each day and try to apply those principles to their own lives. There are so many great things about home schooling your child. An education is one of the best gifts you can offer your child. Shouldn't that gift be the perfection that only you can design?
